Science Supergirls

It's no secret that science is my favorite subject to teach in our homeschool, and thankfully all of the kids love it! So we jumped at the change for the girls to enter a homeschool science fair. They worked so hard on their project in the days and weeks leading up to the fair.

Lenora's project was to see if she could create a rainbow in a jar. She explored how sugar changes the density of water, and it worked. She made a beautiful rainbow in a jar! 

Eliza chose to learn more about how chicks breathe while they're developing in their shells. By dying the shells, she was able to see the tiny pores where air is exchanged as the chick grows.

While looking for a topic for her project, Hazel learned about something called the Bouba Kiki Effect. Essentially, if you show people abstract shapes and ask them to label them as bouba or kiki, most people will label round shapes as bouba and sharp shapes as kiki. Hazel decided to test the Bouba Kiki Effect  in ASL and see if the same effect was observed in a visual language. She found that the Bouba Kiki Effect is observed in ASL. It was such a fun project!

The girls had a blast the day of the fair and made lots of new friends. 

They presented their projects to 3-4 times to judges.

They must have done a great job presenting because they each placed for their age groups! Lenora won 2nd place in K-2.

Eliza won 2nd in grades 3-4.

And Hazel took 1st place in the 5th-6th grade group! At this fair, the top two students in grades 5-12 advance to the Central Utah Science Fair. So Hazel will get a chance to compete again against 5th graders from all over the Wasatch Front. She is so excited!

I love these cute little scientists! I think they worked so hard and did a great job preparing to present. Way to go smart girls!
