Caution Slow: Children at Play

This week I found relics of children's play all over my house. I love watching how children play and learn through play. They are so incredible!

Hazel has been making lots of lists. First up: Safety Tips...
1. Never stand on a swivel chair.
2. Never blow your hair in the bathtub.
3. Do not go out in the rain in lightening storms.
4. Don't follow your cat up the tree.
5. Do not eat crayon (PS. your poop will be different colors)
6. Do not watch too much T.V. (PS. your brain will turn to mush).

Such great advice! Obviously she's like a sponge just soaking up everything around her. I also found this one under her bed. I'm sure this was the work of her and Rose.
Girl Club Rules:
1. No boys allowed.
2. Always bring a bag.
3. Come fancy.
4. Wear your club bracelet.
5. No project is perfect without glitter.

Next up there's Eliza. One freezing cold morning she made sure to tuck in Ellie by the heater before she left for school. She's such a good mommy!

Lenora is just starting to play with her peers and it's adorable. She and her little friend at the YMCA played and played this week. They also walked around holding hands as they moved from toy to toy.

Mr. Orson is adorable. One minute he's carefully holding a baby doll and beaming with pride, and the next minute he's pretending a play spoon is a sword. Already it's amazing to me to see the difference between how boys play vs how girls play. He LOVES to wrestle with Lenora. (and she tolerates it, most of the time!)

Today in church one of the speakers spoke about the Savior's love of children and His admonition that we become as little children. He then gave the example of a child learning to walk. The child doesn't quit trying to walk because he falls down. He doesn't think he's hopeless or that he will never figure it out. He simple keeps trying and trying until he can take steps. Then he moves from toddling to walking to running and so on. Meanwhile the child's parents don't just let the child figure it out on his own. They help him stand up. They "practice" walking by holding his hands. They reach out to the child from a few steps away and catch him when he falls. They help him back up.

He compared us to the toddling child and our Heavenly Father and Christ to the parents. All we have to do is keep trying. When we struggle to master something, we shouldn't become discouraged. In the the grand scheme of things it's a blink of an eye. We should also remember that our Heavenly parents and Jesus Christ are right there - helping us, picking us up, helping us try again. They are pleased with our efforts even when we feel frustrated by our slow progress. I love that analogy! It was such a good perspective to me. I want to be more loving and patient.I want to be more devoted in scripture study, etc, etc. But to me my progress is painfully slow. But I can keep getting up. I can keep trying. I can keep taking step after toddling step!

I'm so thankful for my amazing children and all they teach me. Let's all be a bit more like a child.(It's so much more fun too!)

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving this year was quiet and lovely. An older couple in the ward, Don and Phyllis Higgs, invited us to join them, the missionaries, and a few others couples for dinner. We were in charge of just rolls and pumpkin pie which made for a wonderful, relaxing day. We watched the parade, chatted about my love of the Rockettes, cooked a bit, and Hazel dressed herself and Orson as pilgrims.

Then we joined the Higgs and others for an AMAZING dinner. It was delicious!

I've been thinking a bit about being far from family on holidays. It is hard that we can't be with our families for every holiday. We miss them for sure and miss those big, loud gatherings. But at the same time, these is something truly special about holidays spent with friends instead. For one thing, each year is novel and exciting. There are new faces, new foods, different traditions, and new twists. You also have the opportunity to meet and get to know so many different people! I honestly can't think of a single holiday growing up that included friends, neighbors, or ward members because we always had so much family near by. But now we get to spend our holidays with tons of different people. We get to visit with them and hear their stories. We get to learn about theirs lives and enjoy their examples. It's very different, but also very wonderful!

The day after Thanksgiving we got the house all decorated for Christmas. I love this house so much at Christmas time. The charm of a 110 year old house all decorated just gets me every year. I know I will miss it dearly when the time comes for us to move. And now we're officially on to Christmas!!!

What I love about you...

One morning as I was trying to get the kids ready for school, Hazel had a huge meltdown because she couldn't find the bow she wanted to match her outfit. I was annoyed until I thought, how many more years will she even want to wear bows in her hair!?! She's growing up so fast. They all are! We are in a crazy stage in life, but I know we'll miss it dearly when they're older. So here are a few things I adore about these cute kids right now.

Lenora is an awesome 2-year-old. She never got the memo about the "terrible twos." She is sweet, loving, kind, and relaxed. On the very rare occasion when she becomes upset, she calms down very quickly. The other morning at breakfast she got a small pancake and said, "What a cutie. It's a baby!" then kissed it softly like she would kiss sleeping baby on the head.
She loves to do her puzzles. She also still insists that I help her get on and off the potty even though she's tall enough now to do it herself.
Right now, she's going through a phase where she always wants to sleep on the floor of our room. Even when she falls asleep in her bed she comes down to the "bed" we have made up on the floor in our room. If she was our first, I would have fought it. But now I know just how quickly they grow out of these phases.
Lenora and her friend Tabitha (aka Tabby) from church have the sweetest relationship. She asked her one day, "Tabby, are we best friends?" to which Tabby answer, "Ya, Nora. You my best friend."

Then there's adorable little Eliza. We've loved seeing more and more of her personality breaking through. She's becoming so confident in herself and her own opinions that I just love it. For career day in school she couldn't decide if she wanted to dress as a superhero or a "bug scientist". I think she'll be the worlds most super entomologist ever (or whatever else she decides to be for that matter).
Eliza has also been pioneering her own style. She still LOVES dresses and skirts and rarely wears pants. She insists that her shirts be tucked in so they don't cover up the skirt. She also comes up with fun hairstyles she wants me to do for her. Her favorite is a "super high ponytail."
Earlier this week we ate pulled pork sandwiches for dinner (which are one of Eliza's favorites). As she was eating she asked me in all seriousness why we call them "Cold pork" sandwiches when they aren't even cold! So silly! She also loves to wander around with stuffed animals tucked in her jammies.
Eliza is quite the artist. She loves to draw! Right now, when she draws herself, she always draws her hair with a flip of curl at the end. She draws everyone else's hair straight. I love how she sees herself! She also learned how to draw stars and likes to draw them on anything and everything.
Lenora, Eliza, and Mommy

Hazel is at such a fun age right now! She's still a little girl who wants bows in her hair and who will crawl up on my lap at night to tell me about the book she's writing at school. It's called, "The girl who lost her breakfast, lunch, and dinner!" Yet at the same time she's growing up and forming more and more of her own opinions. She has discovered infinity scarves and other accessories that she's always adding to her outfits. She's also starting to do her own hair for school some days (and it looks nice!)
Hazel adores her sweet puppy Haley. She has done an incredible job being responsible and helping out with Haley. She takes her potty every morning and immediately when we get home without being asked. She plays with her and helps train her. It's no surprise Haley adores Hazel!
Hazel's ASL has really taken off lately too. She's always communicated her thoughts and wants well in ASL, but now she's beginning to use more advanced grammar, classifiers, and so on. Last month Michael took her to a performance by an ASL comedian and she loved every minute of it!
And can I just tell you how proud we are of the polite, kind girl Hazel is becoming? This week her class at school earned a "bring an electronic from home day" as reward for good behavior. Michael has an iPad for work that the kids play games on some Saturday mornings, but otherwise we don't have any handheld electronics that she could take. We explained to her that since the iPad belongs to ISU we couldn't let her take it to school, and she would just have the play on the school iPad (which only has educational apps). Hazel responded with the best attitude and maturity beyond her 7 years. She didn't get upset or pout about it. She didn't complain. She didn't argue that "all the other kids at school...". She didn't try to negotiate or change our minds. She didn't beg for one for Christmas. She simply accepted the situation and made it in to a good one. She decided to bring her own headphones from home to use with the school iPad and came home excited about the spelling game she got to try out. What in incredible and grounded little girl!

Last, but not least, there's adorable little Orson. He is in that wonderful age of excitement about the world. Every new experience just lights up his little face with joy. He loves to learn and soak up new information. Here he pointing at the fire while Michael's showing him the sign.
As Orson grows we continue to see how different boys are from girls. He is such an adventurous little guy! Everyday we pick up Eliza at her school then play on the playground while we wait for Hazel to bus over from her school. Orson has learned to climb up the stairs, crawl over this large bridge, go up a few more stairs, and go down the big slide on his tummy. He's so big!
Of course his adventures sometimes get him in trouble like here where he got his head stuck in the desk! He's also quickly learned how to keep the girls away from him by biting or pulling their hair. We're working on it haha!
Orson is beginning to walk more and more. He's also picking up more and more signs, gestures, and words. He is so aware and opinionated for a boy his age. In fact, people often comment he acts more like's he two than barely one. He's also a great problem solver. The other morning he spotted some pumpkin bars in a bag on the counter, used the step-stool to climb up and get them, then crawled while dragging the bag to the bathroom to find me in hopes I would open them for him. You may have me wrapped around your little finger, but I stood my ground on that one.

They won't be this little forever. But I know we will continue to find joy in the different stages of their lives as they grow. We are beginning to more fully understand why our only true joy comes from our families.

Halloween 2016

This year the kids, especially Eliza, wanted to grow a big pumpkin in our garden. As you can see it was a success! This pumpkin weighs 65 pounds!!! The day before Halloween we got to work carving it. It made an excellent elephant which was Eliza's choice of course.

For Halloween the kids were: Orson - yoda, Lenora - Anna from Frozen. I made her costume and I love how it turned out!

Eliza - Felicity the American Girl and Hazel - the new Cinderella

Of course there was awesome Iowa trunk-or-treat at a ward members acerage, school parades/festivals, and trick-or-treating the night of Halloween. These two put together awesome Halloween day outfits for school.

The girls even made sure the dogs were festive!

This was the first year Lenora understood trick-or-treating. It was adorable to watch her collecting her candy! Orson may not understand the trick-or-treating part but he definitely LOVED the candy part! (Suckers were the way I kept him calm while getting his casts on and off so he knew right away what those yummy things were. And to think Hazel never tasted one until she was almost 2. Fourth child privileges!)

Happy Halloween!

Harry Potter Party

It's no secret I'm a long time Harry Potter fan. So when our best Iowa friends, the Farrells, decided to host a Harry Potter party I was ecstatic! Our invitation even arrived by balloon owl! We ate Honeydukes sweets, hunted horcruxes, ate at the four house tables, and played Quiditch. The pictures say it all...
Hazel as Hermionie
Orson as Dobby the free elf
Lenora a mermaid and Eliza the Golden Snitch
Rose as Professor McGonagall
Wizard dressing as a muggle and Luna Lovegood
Rita Skeeter and Mrs.Weasley
Mrs and Mr Weasley with a Weasley baby
It was a wonderful night. Sadly Michael has class for his PhD. He was going to go as Gildory Lockheart. Wouldn't he have been perfect!?!

A Day at the Zoo

The middle of October we used our free zoo passes from the summer reading program to enjoy a day at the zoo. We had an extra pass so Hazel's best friend Rose joined us. These two are so adorable! In fact, they remind me of myself and my best friend at that age - Renee. If they could, they would spend every afternoon playing. They are already planning to be roommates in college at BYU!

The weather was perfect and the animals were very active. This tiger sat right up by the glass looking at them for a long time.

It was Orson's first time at the zoo and he loved it! He especially liked hearing us make the animal noises. He even attempted a roar for the lion and a quack for a duck.

A great day with some great kids!
